Innovation project paves the way for advanced road infrastructure management in the United States

Thursday, December 19, 2024

Future Mobility has just granted funding for a new innovation project, Road Condition Data. Klimator, a Swedish leader in applied road climatology, in partnership with the American meteorology data company Synoptic Data, seeks to adapt Klimator’s road climatology models to the unique challenges posed by the United States road infrastructure.

A road, data is visualized on the road

Currently, Klimator’s Road Condition Data (RCD) platform is widely used across Europe in sectors such as winter maintenance and automotive, delivering real-time, localized road weather data. By working closely with Synoptic, Klimator aims to enhance this data by integrating it with local weather and sensor information in the United States. The project will improve road condition predictions and optimize vehicle performance for autonomous driving, electric vehicle (EV) efficiency, and shared mobility services.

Collaboration is key to driving innovation and tackling complex challenges. By combining the core expertise of Synoptic and Klimator, we unlock new synergies, enabling the development of solutions that would be unattainable independently. This partnership not only accelerates progress but also inspires creativity and resilience in pursuing our shared goals

Viktoria Bogren, Head of Automotive at Klimator and the project manager for Road Condition Data

Why is this project important?

"Having the opportunity to collaborate with Synoptic, experts in a field that complements our own, is incredibly exciting. We look forward to deepening our 30 years of knowledge within the field of road climatology with a focus on the U.S. This project is crucial because it addresses the growing need for tailored mobility solutions that adapt to the unique challenges posed by varying road conditions and climates. By leveraging advanced data and expertise, our solution can be used to improve both safety and efficiency on the roads, reducing accidents and enhancing the overall driving experience. This project will support our efforts to create the absolute best conditions for road users, where we refuse to settle for a generic AI estimate, instead focusing on delivering high-accuracy solutions that truly make a difference." explains Viktoria Bogren.

How do you see the integration of Klimator’s road condition models with United States infrastructure impacting autonomous driving?

"The integration of Klimator’s road condition models offers the opportunity to optimize the Operational Design Domain (ODD) for autonomous vehicles as a crucial first step. For example, these models can help autonomous systems identify safer routes, avoid areas, or reschedule departures for autonomous vehicles, such as those operating in last-mile delivery in smart city environments. Additionally, Kliamtor’s models can be used to optimize EV efficiency by improving route planning and energy use, ultimately extending vehicle range. Strategic insights from the data can further guide the development of infrastructure, such as the strategic placement of EV charging stations, ensuring better accessibility and promoting wider adoption." says Viktoria.

The project, funded by Future Mobility, will run from 2024 to 2025, and aims to establish more accurate road condition models tailored to conditions in the United States. This initiative also strengthens collaboration between Sweden and the United States, driving forward innovation in sustainable mobility solutions.
