Standardizing Safety: New US-Swedish Collaboration Tackles Automotive Radar Interference

As vehicles become increasingly automated, the density of onboard radar sensors is rising. A new transatlantic project, MeTARI, aims to solve the growing risk of radar signal congestion by developing the industry’s first harmonized method for testing automotive radar interference.

Automotive radar is a critical technology for modern Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Automated Driving (AD), enabling functions like adaptive cruise control and collision avoidance. However, as the industry projects most new vehicles will soon integrate six to eight sensors, the automotive frequency band (76-81 GHz) is becoming highly congested.

In dense traffic environments, this rapid increase in signal sources creates overlapping interference. This can degrade a vehicle's detection accuracy, generate false "ghost" objects, and cause phantom braking. While some fragmented, vendor-specific mitigation techniques exist, the industry currently lacks a standardized test methodology to benchmark and validate radar resilience.

Bridging the Gap in Radar Assurance

To address this barrier to safe automated mobility, a consortium comprising Sweden’s Radar Reticence and Halmstad University, alongside US-based Michigan Tech Research Institute (MTRI) and Dynamic Research Inc. (DRI), have via Future Mobility secured funding from Vinnova and the Swedish Energy Agency to develop and demonstrate a new standardized testing framework.

The project, titled Methods for Testing Automotive Radar Interference (MeTARI), will translate theoretical interference profiles into practical, reproducible lab requirements. By establishing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and standardized calibration procedures, the project will allow OEMs, suppliers, and regulators to reliably compare technologies.

Informing Global Safety Standards

The MeTARI project has already garnered letters of support from major automotive players, including Volvo Cars and NIRA Dynamics. Throughout the project, the consortium will engage closely with key regulatory bodies, such as Euro NCAP and NHTSA, to share findings and lay the groundwork for large-scale validation and global standardization.

By ensuring that radar systems function reliably in dense, mixed-vendor environments, the project not only improves road safety but also reduces congestion-related emissions, contributing to a smoother, more sustainable transportation ecosystem.

This chamber at Halmstad University has been utilized during the project to provide a perfectly controlled testing environment. By eliminating all background noise and signal reflections, the room allows for highly accurate measurements of wireless signals, antennas, or sensors.
