Congestion is a growing problem in cities across Sweden and the United States, leading to increased travel times, fuel consumption, and emissions. To address this, researchers from Linköping University and KTH Royal Institute of Technology partnered with the California-based traffic technology company Xtelligent in an innovation project funded by Future Mobility.

Clas Rydergren, project leader and researcher at Linköping University, talks about the project and how it is to work with United States partners.

Michael Lim, cofounder of Xtelligent and Richard Pelletier, Head of Design, Xtelligent, speak about the outcome of the project.

Together, the team developed and validated a digital planning tool designed to help Swedish traffic authorities and municipalities make more informed decisions. The prototype, based on Swedish research and Xtelligent’s dynamic network control system used in California, visualizes the effects of different traffic management strategies and supports a more holistic view of traffic flows.

“The project has not only contributed to new technological development, but also opened up new opportunities for collaboration between Sweden and the United States. Working with Xtelligent has given us access to their expertise in traffic management and interface development, which has enriched our own research in ways we could not otherwise have achieved,”

Clas Rydergren, project leader and researcher at Linköping University.

The prototype developed in the project is designed to support traffic authorities and municipalities in making better decisions by visualizing the effects of different traffic management strategies – creating a systems perspective on traffic flows.

Result: A long-term collaboration

The project has not only resulted in a technical innovation. It has also led to long-term impact. As a result of the collaboration, Xtelligent is now preparing to establish operations in Sweden to strengthen its local presence and further collaboration with Swedish actors.

“Sweden has a strong culture of innovation and collaboration, which aligns perfectly with how we work – in ecosystems alongside public agencies, industry partners, and researchers. Over the past two years, we’ve had the opportunity to work with Swedish partners, and it’s proven to be something very real – not just a theoretical ambition. We truly value that aspect of Sweden,”

— Mike Lim, cofounder of Xtelligent.

The project runs through 2025 and serves as a concrete example of how Future Mobility supports international collaborations that accelerate the development of connected and intelligent transport systems.
