Zero-emission trucks have the potential to offer many benefits to fleets, including lower fuel costs and less maintenance. However, these benefits need to be proven and quantified through real-world deployments.

Demonstration projects have been in progress for a few years, but the results and what they mean for the future of transportation have not been considered coherently across national borders. Although the market for zero-emission trucks is young, Sweden and the United States are at the forefront of this developing technology. Accelerating the deployment of these vehicles is dependent on data collection and open communication about the successes and challenges experienced by early adopters.

Both CALSTART and Lindholmen Science Park have been involved in many early deployments seeking to study how these vehicles perform in real-world fleet operations. Researching the results of past and current deployments and presenting the learnings from each country will help speed the transition to zero-emission trucks and the growth of clean transportation in general.

What's the project goal?

The project goal is to have Sweden and the United States share knowledge and learn from each other’s experience with the early development of the zero-emission truck market.

The project will identify successful deployments, operational strategies, and policies that worked in both countries in various logistic applications.

Best practices will also be shared through open webinars to actors in both countries. Specific areas of research and cross-comparison may include:

  • Real-world in-use data on duty cycle, performance, and operating costs;

  • Challenges and solutions for accelerating deployment of MHD charging infrastructure and managing multi-vehicle charging;

  • Using predictive modeling to estimate operational range for ZETs;

  • Approaches to utility rate structuring and implications on operating costs
